Grants
Please read the following notes carefully before making your application to the
Foundation. Applicants should demonstrate clearly how the project meets certain
criteria, for example, that it explores new areas of drama; involves new
writers; performs work to new theatre audiences; or gives experience to little
known performers. Also, that the production is based in the London area.

What projects are eligible for a grant?
- There needs to be a strong element of actual and public
performance in all projects. ‘Public’, in this instance, includes
performances in schools and other non-theatrical bodies or organisations.
The audiences should not be by invitation-only, unless they are specifically
audiences who would otherwise tend not see live performance.
- Grants will only be considered for projects that aspire to good
professional standards. Please note that we do not support amateur
productions.
- If requesting support for projects aimed at helping people to
attend a theatrical production, applicants should demonstrate how the people
or groups being helped will have improved access to live theatre, for
example, wheelchair access or audio description.
- All professional and technical activities that contribute to
dramatic performance will be considered for an award, including stage and
property management, scenery design, construction, sound and lighting
systems and upgrading of on-site facilities.
- Applicants need to demonstrate that the amount of money being
requested will make a significant difference to that project’s realisation.
For example, by raising the standard of the project or reaching a wider
audience.
- The company, organisation or group of people who have proposed
the project should be able to demonstrate a track record in the sort of
activity for which the application is being made.
- Applicants should be able to confirm that they have a venue
booked for their production.
- Applicants should be companies not individuals.
What projects are not eligible for a grant?
- Projects that relate exclusively to music e.g. a song or a
musical recital.
- Dance which is not within a theatrical context.
- Projects that are wholly concerned with drama training or
education or the academic study of dramatic performance.
- Amateur dramatic projects.
- Administrative running costs of an organisation.
- Individuals seeking funds for personal tuition.
Where do projects have to take place?
All projects must take place within the Greater London area.
What is the value of a grant?
Grants will normally be in the range of £250 - £2000. Applicants must specify
the precise amount being requested. Please note that the Foundation receives
more applications than available funds.
How often can a grant be received?
If an organisation has been awarded a grant they cannot make another application
for two years.
Can I apply for a grant for my drama tuition?
We do not make any grants to individuals for training purposes outside of the
Lilian Baylis Awards to students who are nominated by their drama school.
What is the deadline for applications?
Applications need to be made by the end of February for the Spring round of
funding and the end of August for the Autumn round.
Please note that the project for which you are applying for a grant
must take place AFTER the April or October meeting as the Trustees do not make
retrospective grants.
